How to Use Retainer Cleaner Tablets the Right Way
Share
Cleaning tablets are the easiest way to deep clean a retainer, aligner, night guard or denture. Drop one in water, drop in the appliance, wait, rinse. A few details make them work better.
Step by step
- Use warm water, not hot. Warm water helps the tablet dissolve and work. Hot water can warp plastic appliances. If it is too hot to comfortably hold a finger in, it is too hot.
- Use enough water to cover the appliance. A cup or a small bowl is usually right. The appliance should be fully under the surface.
- Drop in the tablet, then the appliance. The tablet fizzes as it dissolves and releases the cleaning agents.
- Soak for the time on the package. Longer is not always better. Follow the package instructions.
- Brush gently if needed. After soaking, a soft brush lifts any loosened film.
- Rinse well. Rinse under running water before wearing the appliance again.
How often
A few times a week is enough for most people, with rinsing and gentle brushing on the other days. If your appliance stains or smells quickly, soak more often.
Can you combine tablets with an ultrasonic cleaner?
Yes. Dissolving one of our retainer cleaner tablets in the water of an ultrasonic retainer cleaner combines the cleaning solution with ultrasonic action. It is a good option for heavy buildup.
Things to avoid
- Soaking overnight unless the package says it is safe.
- Reusing the same solution for several days.
- Swallowing the solution or using it as mouthwash. Keep tablets away from children.
