How to Use an Ultrasonic Cleaner for Retainers, Step by Step

An ultrasonic cleaner is the most hands-off way to deep clean a retainer, aligner, night guard or denture. You fill it, start it and come back a few minutes later. A few habits make every cycle work better.

Step by step

  1. Rinse the appliance first. Knock off loose debris under the tap so the cleaner can work on what is stuck.
  2. Fill with cool or lukewarm water. Fill to the line on the tank. Water carries the sound waves, so the appliance must be fully covered. Do not use hot water.
  3. Add a tablet if you want. Water alone works for everyday cleaning. For stains or heavy buildup, dissolve one of our retainer cleaner tablets in the water first.
  4. Place the appliance in the basket. Do not let it rest directly on the bottom of the tank.
  5. Choose a cycle. Our ultrasonic retainer cleaner offers 3, 5 and 10 minute cycles and shuts off automatically. Three minutes is enough for daily cleaning. Use the longer cycles for heavier buildup.
  6. Rinse and dry. Rinse the appliance under running water, give it a quick look, and let it dry before storing.

How it works

The cleaner sends high-frequency sound waves through the water. The waves form microscopic bubbles that collapse against the surface of the appliance, shaking loose film and debris, including in grooves and around wires where a brush cannot reach.

Care for the cleaner

Empty the tank after each use, wipe it dry, and leave the lid open for a while. Do not run the cleaner empty.

Can it damage a retainer?

Ultrasonic cleaning is gentle on retainer plastics and metals when used with cool water. If your appliance has loose parts or repairs, ask your orthodontist first.
