How to Clean Your Retainer Case (and Why It Matters)
Share
People put a lot of effort into cleaning their retainer and then drop it into a case that has not been washed in months. The case is dark, closed and often damp, which makes it a good place for bacteria and mold to grow. Whatever is in the case ends up on the retainer.
How to clean the case
- Rinse out any loose debris.
- Wash the inside and outside with warm water and a little dish soap. A soft brush helps with the corners and the hinge.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- Leave the case open to air dry. Do not close it while it is wet.
Doing this once a week is enough for most people. If the case smells or has visible spots, clean it right away.
Can you deep clean the case?
Yes. The case can soak in the same solution as the retainer. Dissolve one of our retainer cleaner tablets in warm water and soak the open case for the time on the package, then rinse and dry. Many cases also fit inside an ultrasonic retainer cleaner, which cleans the hinge and corners well.
Habits that keep the case clean
- Put the retainer in dry, or at least shaken off, rather than dripping wet.
- Leave the case open at home so air can get in.
- Do not store the case in a bathroom cabinet that stays humid.
When to replace the case
Cases are cheap and do not last forever. Replace it if the hinge breaks, the plastic cracks, or a smell stays after washing.
