Do You Need a Special Cleaner for Aligners?

Many aligner brands sell their own cleaning crystals or tablets, often at a premium. A common question is whether aligners need a special product or whether any appliance cleaner will do.

What aligners are made of

Clear aligners and clear retainers are made of similar thin plastics. Both are soft enough to scratch, both cloud when film builds up, and both are damaged by heat. From a cleaning point of view, an aligner is a retainer that you replace more often.

What cleaning products do

Branded crystals and general retainer cleaning tablets work the same way. They dissolve in water and release cleaning agents that loosen plaque film and lift stains while the appliance soaks. Our retainer cleaner tablets are made for retainers, aligners, night guards and dentures, and work in the same soak-and-rinse routine.

What matters more than the brand

  • Water temperature. Warm, not hot. Heat warps aligners no matter what is dissolved in the water.
  • Consistency. Rinsing every time you take the aligners out and soaking a few times a week matters more than which product you use.
  • Clean teeth. Aligners hold whatever is on your teeth against them. Brushing and flossing before you put them in keeps them clear.

An option that uses no product at all

An ultrasonic retainer cleaner cleans aligners with water alone. It is a one-time purchase instead of an ongoing one, and it reaches the inside corners of the tray that a soak loosens but does not always lift.

The short version

Aligners do not need a special brand of cleaner. They need a gentle, regular routine.
