7 Retainer Cleaning Mistakes to Avoid
Share
Most of the retainers we hear about that cracked, warped or clouded were damaged by cleaning, not by wear. Here are the mistakes we see most often.
1. Using hot water
Heat warps retainer plastic. Once the shape changes, the retainer no longer fits. Use cool or lukewarm water, never hot or boiling.
2. Brushing with toothpaste
Toothpaste is abrasive. It leaves fine scratches that cloud the plastic and trap bacteria. Use a soft brush with plain water or mild soap.
3. Soaking in mouthwash
Alcohol dries out plastic and dyes stain it. Mouthwash does not remove film either.
4. Using bleach or harsh cleaners
Bleach damages plastic, corrodes metal and is unsafe to put in your mouth even after rinsing.
5. Putting it away wet
A wet retainer in a closed case grows bacteria and starts to smell. Let it dry for a few minutes first.
6. Forgetting the case
A dirty case undoes a clean retainer. Wash it weekly with soap and water and let it dry open.
7. Skipping deep cleaning
Rinsing and brushing handle the surface, but film in grooves hardens into deposits. A few times a week, soak with one of our retainer cleaner tablets or run the retainer through an ultrasonic retainer cleaner.
The routine that works
Rinse after every wear. Brush gently once a day. Deep clean a few times a week. Dry before storing. Keep the case clean. It takes a few minutes a day and keeps the retainer clear and comfortable for its full life.
